To Eat or Not To Eat? Deli Meats!

In a recent session, a client asked the following question:

“Are deli meats a poor nutritional source to include in my diet because of sodium? “

A: Deli meats are perfectly fine to include in your regular intake.  The main concern that comes with deli meat consumption is the nitrate and sodium content.  Sodium nitrate is an ingredient that is commonly used as a food preservative.  If you consume deli meat on a regular basis, I would recommend purchasing a nitrite free deli meat product.  Applegate Farms and Hormel Natural Choice are two examples of readily available nitrite free deli meat products.  If you suffer from high blood pressure then you would simply look for the reduced sodium version!
